Activists from the organization Futuro Vegetal have staged a new protest action this Tuesday by cutting off access to MercaMadrid, causing traffic congestion on the M40. The members of Futuro Vegetal carried a banner that read "Sorry for the inconvenience. We continue to demand a better world."
Futuro Vegetal had already carried out two similar actions, one during the Christmas holidays on December 23, and another during the return operation for Holy Week on April 10. This group has also carried out other protests such as sticking to the paintings of the Majas de Velázquez or to the lectern of the Congress of Deputies and the sabotage of the largest macromatadero in the Spanish state.
The environmental organization demands that the Government redirect subsidies from livestock to plant-based and socially responsible projects. "We are here because we are terrified; the passivity of governments and corporations in the face of the Climate Crisis is leading us towards food insecurity due to the loss of crops and potable water," explained a member of Futuro Vegetal.
They also stated that "livestock farming is one of the main industries emitting greenhouse gases, especially methane. According to the FAO and the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), slowing down the impact of livestock farming is key to stopping and mitigating the Climate Emergency."
From Futuro Vegetal, they hope that this action will serve to finally implement decisive measures by the government to confront the seriousness of the crisis, taking measures aimed at a transition of the food system that protects rural areas, the environment, and animals.
